Deloitte Interview Questions and Answers for Freshers (2026)

Deloitte Interview Questions and Answers for Freshers (2026)

Here is the thing that should change how you prepare: for campus hiring in 2026, Deloitte's interview is a single combined technical and HR round lasting roughly 15 to 25 minutes.

That is it. One conversation, and often shorter than the time you spent finding the building.

Two consequences follow. First, there is no warm-up round to recover in, so your first two answers carry disproportionate weight. Second, most of that short conversation goes to your resume and your final-year project, because that is the fastest way for an interviewer to find out whether you are real. Candidates who prepared forty textbook definitions and never rehearsed talking about their own work are preparing for the wrong interview.

Also worth knowing before you read any older guide: the group discussion and JAM rounds have been dropped from the Deloitte campus process as of 2026. Plenty of prep sites still list them.

This guide covers Deloitte interview questions and answers for freshers in India, across both Deloitte entities and every main track: technology, audit and assurance, tax, consulting and analytics. Whether you are a B.Tech student applying to USI or a B.Com student applying to Deloitte India, the section you need is below. It is the main guide in our Deloitte series, and where a topic deserves a full question bank of its own, it links through.

First: Which Deloitte Are You Applying To?

This is not a technicality. They are separate legal entities with separate portals and separate hiring teams, and applying to one does not put you in front of the other.

Deloitte India serves clients within India, across audit, tax, risk and advisory. It recruits primarily from commerce and CA backgrounds. Reported fresher audit and tax packages sit in roughly the ₹4 to ₹6 LPA range.

Deloitte US-India (USI) is part of the Deloitte US organisation, located in India, serving clients of the US member firm. It hires engineering graduates into technology and business analyst roles. Reported USI technology fresher packages sit in roughly the ₹7 to ₹9 LPA range, noticeably above mass IT recruiter averages.

Offices for both sit across Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata.

A forwarded WhatsApp post saying "Deloitte analyst hiring" often will not tell you which entity it is. Check the requisition. Salary figures above are third-party reported and shift each cycle, so treat them as indicative.

Deloitte Recruitment Process 2026

For engineering campus hiring (USI), the process now runs four stages:

  1. Registration and profile screening. Your resume is checked against the role. Academic consistency matters here.
  2. Online assessment, around 90 minutes. Quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability, and a coding section. You can compile and execute, and you see how many hidden test cases pass. Your last submitted version is what counts.
  3. Combined technical and HR interview, 15 to 25 minutes. One round, both areas, one interviewer.
  4. Offer.

For off-campus and client-facing or BPO-track roles, the shape differs:

  1. Online assessment through AMCAT or HireVue, weighted heavily toward quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and a strict English and email-writing test.
  2. Versant test. An automated Pearson voice and accent assessment, used for roles involving direct communication with international clients. Speak at a natural pace and finish your sentences. It is scoring fluency and clarity, not accent imitation.
  3. Technical or role-fit interview, covering Excel, database understanding and scenario-based prioritisation.
  4. Partner or HR interview on behavioural questions and values alignment.

Eligibility is typically 60% or above in Class X, Class XII and graduation. For engineering roles, B.E or B.Tech in any discipline plus MCA, full-time courses only. Requirements vary by requisition, so read the actual posting.

How to Prepare for a 20-Minute Interview

This is the part that matters most and gets written about least. When the whole interview is one short round, three things follow.

Your project answer is the interview. Expect a large share of the time on it: what you built, what technology, why that technology, where else it could apply. Prepare a two-minute version and a five-minute version, out loud.

Everything on your resume is fair game and there is no time to recover. In a three-round process you can survive one weak answer. Here you cannot. Remove anything you cannot discuss for two minutes.

Your first answer sets the level. The interviewer forms a working impression in the opening ninety seconds and spends the remaining time testing it. A crisp, structured "tell me about yourself" genuinely changes what happens next.

Deloitte HR and Fit Interview Questions

1. Tell Me About Yourself

Your opener, and in a 20-minute round it is disproportionately important. The interviewer is checking whether you can structure a thought and stop on time. Give an arc: academic background, what got you interested, one thing you built, why you are here.

Effective Answer: "I am a final-year Computer Science student at [college]. I got properly interested in the data side in my fifth semester when I built a dashboard for our college fest registrations, because it was the first time I had to decide what a number actually meant rather than just display it. Since then I have focused on SQL and Python, and I did a two-month internship where I automated a weekly report that had been manual. I am looking to start somewhere I will see many different clients and problems early, which is what brought me to Deloitte USI."

2. Why Deloitte?

The question where preparation shows most clearly, and generic Big Four praise fails. Name something specific and checkable, then connect it to you.

Effective Answer: "Two reasons. First, the USI model specifically. I would be working on engagements for US clients from day one rather than only domestic work, and that international exposure early is worth more to me than a marginally higher package elsewhere. Second, the breadth. Deloitte spans audit, tax, consulting, risk and technology, and as a fresher I do not yet know exactly where I will be strongest. I would rather find that out inside one firm than by changing employers to try each thing."

3. Why Deloitte and Not Another Big 4 Firm?

The harder follow-up, and the honest answer for most candidates is that they applied to all four. Acknowledge it, then give a real differentiator.

Effective Answer: "I did apply to more than one and I will not pretend otherwise. What put Deloitte first for me is the size of the technology practice relative to the others. Deloitte USI is not a support function attached to an audit firm, it is a large delivery organisation in its own right, and for someone entering on the technology side that changes what the first three years look like. I would rather be in the main line of the business than adjacent to it."

4. What Do You Know About Deloitte?

A research check. You do not need financials. You need to show you understand the structure.

Effective Answer: "Deloitte is one of the Big Four professional services firms, working across audit and assurance, tax, risk advisory, financial advisory and consulting. In India it operates as two distinct entities: Deloitte India, serving domestic clients, and Deloitte US-India, which is part of the US organisation and serves US member firm clients from Indian offices. I have applied to USI, so my understanding is that the work is delivery for US engagements rather than domestic client-facing work."

5. Tell Me About a Difficult Team Situation

Behavioural questions at Deloitte lean on real examples with measurable outcomes. The wrong answer blames a teammate or claims you have never had a difficult one.

Effective Answer: "One teammate on our final-year project went quiet for two weeks and we assumed he was not bothering. Instead of escalating to our guide, I asked him directly, and he was stuck on the framework and embarrassed to say so. We paired for two sessions and he ended up owning the entire frontend. What I took from it is that non-contribution looks like laziness from outside and feels like being stuck from inside, and asking is the only way to tell which."

6. Tell Me About a Failure

The trap is choosing a fake failure. Pick something that actually cost something and be specific about the system you changed afterwards, not just the lesson you felt.

Effective Answer: "I ran a delete query on our project database during testing without a WHERE clause and wiped around 400 records. Our last backup was four days old, so I lost a full day recreating test data. Two things changed. I never run a delete now without running it as a SELECT first to see exactly what it will touch. And I set up an automated daily backup, because the real failure was not the typo, it was that a single typo could cost four days."

7. Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

Screens for attrition risk. Deloitte invests in fresher training, so plans to leave in year two are expensive.

Effective Answer: "In five years I would like to be someone the team hands the difficult module to, and who is reviewing work rather than only producing it. Realistically that means two to three years getting genuinely strong technically, then taking on delivery responsibility and mentoring new joiners. I would like that to happen in one place, because depth comes from staying long enough to see engagements through."

8. Do You Have Any Questions for Us?

Still scored, even in a short round. Saying no reads as disinterest. Keep it to one or two, given the time.

Effective Answer: "One thing mainly. What does the first year typically look like in this business area, in terms of how soon a fresher works directly on client deliverables?"

Deloitte Technical Interview Questions

For USI technology roles, expect core computer science fundamentals and a serious dig into your project. Depth is moderate rather than product-company hard, but the questioning is fast because the round is short.

9. Explain Your Final Year Project

The single most important question in a Deloitte interview, and the one candidates prepare least. Expect follow-ups on what technology you used, why you chose it, and where else the project could apply. Mention only what you can defend.

Effective Answer: "We built a hostel complaint management system because complaints were tracked on paper and getting lost. Java backend, MySQL database, basic web frontend. I owned the backend and the database, so schema design, the complaint routing logic and the status API. The hardest part was the escalation rule: if a complaint is not actioned within 48 hours it moves to the warden. Getting that reliable without a scheduler was messy, and if I rebuilt it today I would use a proper scheduled job instead of the workaround we used."

Expect next: "Where else could this be applied?" Have an answer. Interviewers ask it specifically to see whether you understand the problem you solved or only the code you wrote. Ticket routing in any service organisation, with the same escalation logic, is a good response.

10. What is Object-Oriented Programming?

The standard opener for anyone whose resume mentions Java, C++ or Python. Expect an immediate request for examples, so have one per pillar ready.

Effective Answer: "OOP structures code around objects, which bundle data with the methods that act on it, rather than around procedures. The four pillars are encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism and abstraction. Encapsulation keeps data private and accessible only through methods. Inheritance lets a class reuse another's properties. Polymorphism lets the same method behave differently depending on the object. Abstraction hides implementation and exposes only what is needed. The practical benefit is code you can change in one place without breaking unrelated parts."

11. What is the Difference Between an Array and a Linked List?

A trade-off question. Listing differences gets you half the marks. Saying when you would choose each gets the rest.

Effective Answer: "Arrays store elements in contiguous memory, so access by index is O(1), but inserting or deleting in the middle is O(n) because elements shift. Linked lists store nodes with pointers, so insertion and deletion are O(1) if you already hold the node reference, but access is O(n) since you traverse from the head. Arrays for read-heavy work, linked lists for insert-heavy work."

12. What is a SQL JOIN? Explain the Types

SQL appears across technology, analytics, business analyst and even some finance tracks at Deloitte. This is the likeliest single technical question you will face anywhere in the firm.

Effective Answer: "A JOIN combines rows from two or more tables on a related column. INNER JOIN returns only matching rows. LEFT JOIN returns everything from the left table plus matches from the right, with nulls where there is no match, which is how you find records missing a counterpart. RIGHT JOIN is the mirror. FULL OUTER JOIN returns both sides. In practice most business questions are answered with INNER and LEFT."

13. What is Normalisation?

A database design question. Give the benefit and the trade-off, because the trade-off is what candidates omit.

Effective Answer: "Normalisation organises data to reduce redundancy and prevent update anomalies. 1NF requires atomic values, 2NF removes partial dependency on a composite key, 3NF removes transitive dependency. The benefit is integrity, since you update a value in one place rather than in forty rows. The cost is more joins, which is why reporting and warehouse tables are often deliberately denormalised."

14. Which Programming Language Are You Most Comfortable With, and Why?

This decides where the remaining minutes go. Answer honestly, because whatever you name is what you will be questioned on. Never name a language that is on your resume but has not been opened since second year.

Effective Answer: "Java, because it is what I have built the most in, including my project backend. I am comfortable with OOP concepts, collections and exception handling. I can write Python for scripting and data work as well, but Java is where I would be most confident in a code review."

Deloitte India Audit and Assurance Interview Questions

For Deloitte India audit and assurance roles, expect Indian standards and Indian law rather than US GAAP. Answers below assume the Ind AS and Companies Act context.

The most common opening technical question in any Deloitte India finance interview. The linkages are what prove understanding, so lead with those rather than listing the three.

Effective Answer: "The income statement, the balance sheet and the cash flow statement. Net profit flows into retained earnings on the balance sheet and forms the opening line of the cash flow statement. The cash flow statement reconciles profit to actual cash by adjusting for non-cash items like depreciation and for working capital movements, and the closing cash it produces is the cash balance on the balance sheet. So a change in any one flows through the other two."

Expect next: "If depreciation increases by 100, walk me through all three." Practise this out loud. It is the most common second question in a Big 4 finance interview, and a complete answer includes the tax effect.

16. What is the Difference Between Statutory Audit and Internal Audit?

An Indian-context question that comes up constantly and that candidates often blur together.

Effective Answer: "A statutory audit is required by law, under the Companies Act 2013 for companies meeting the thresholds, and is conducted by an independent external auditor who reports to the shareholders on whether the financial statements give a true and fair view. An internal audit is commissioned by management or the audit committee, is broader in scope covering process efficiency and control effectiveness as well as financial accuracy, and reports internally. Statutory audit is about assurance to outsiders. Internal audit is about improvement for insiders."

17. What is Materiality?

Tests judgement, not memory. The qualitative side is what most candidates miss and what interviewers are listening for.

Effective Answer: "Materiality is the threshold above which a misstatement could reasonably influence the decisions of users of the financial statements. It is usually set against a benchmark such as revenue, profit before tax or total assets, depending on the entity. The part people miss is that it is not purely quantitative. A small amount can be material by nature, for example something that turns a profit into a loss, a related party transaction, a breach of a loan covenant, or anything involving fraud or non-compliance."

Expect next: "So would you ignore a misstatement below materiality?" No. You accumulate it, because several immaterial items can be material together, and you still consider whether it points at a larger process failure.

18. What Are Audit Assertions?

A question that separates candidates who studied audit from candidates who read a blog about it. Most fresher lists skip it entirely, which is exactly why knowing it helps.

Effective Answer: "Audit assertions are the implicit claims management makes about the figures in the financial statements, and audit procedures are designed to test them. For transactions the main ones are occurrence, completeness, accuracy, cut-off and classification. For balances they are existence, rights and obligations, completeness and valuation. They tell you what a procedure is actually for. Confirming a receivable with a customer tests existence, but it does not test valuation, because a customer confirming they owe the money says nothing about whether they can pay it."

19. What is Ind AS and How Does It Differ From IFRS?

Directly relevant to Deloitte India work, and a good discriminator between candidates who have worked with the standards and candidates who have only heard of them.

Effective Answer: "Ind AS is India's set of accounting standards, converged with IFRS rather than identical to it. The structure and principles largely mirror IFRS, but there are carve-outs and carve-ins where the Indian standard differs to suit local law or conditions. Applicability is phased by net worth and listing status under the Companies Act rules. So someone comfortable with Ind AS can read IFRS easily, but should not assume the treatment of any specific item is the same without checking."

20. What is Professional Scepticism?

Rarely on fresher question lists and frequently in the room. It is also the quality the firm is really assessing across the whole interview.

Effective Answer: "Professional scepticism is maintaining a questioning mind, staying alert to conditions that may indicate misstatement, and assessing evidence critically rather than accepting it because it came from a client you trust. It does not mean assuming dishonesty. It means management's explanation is a starting point to be corroborated, not a conclusion. In practice it usually looks like asking for the underlying document rather than accepting the summary."

Deloitte India Tax Interview Questions

21. What is the Difference Between Direct and Indirect Tax?

A fundamentals check in almost every tax interview.

Effective Answer: "Direct tax is levied on income or wealth and borne by the person on whom it is imposed, so the burden cannot be shifted. Income tax and corporate tax are examples. Indirect tax is levied on goods and services with the burden passed to the end consumer, the seller collecting and remitting it. GST and customs duty are examples. Direct tax is progressive by design, while indirect tax falls broadly the same on everyone regardless of income."

22. Explain the Structure of GST in India

An India-specific question that a surprising number of candidates cannot answer cleanly despite using the term daily.

Effective Answer: "GST is a destination-based consumption tax with a dual structure. On an intra-state supply, CGST goes to the centre and SGST to the state, split from the same rate. On an inter-state supply, IGST is charged instead and later apportioned between the centre and the destination state. The mechanism that makes it work is input tax credit, where a business offsets tax paid on inputs against tax collected on outputs, so tax applies only to the value added at each stage rather than cascading."

23. What is TDS and Why Does It Exist?

Common in tax interviews and easy to answer well if you explain the purpose rather than just the mechanism.

Effective Answer: "Tax Deducted at Source requires the payer to deduct tax at prescribed rates when making specified payments such as salary, rent, professional fees or interest, and deposit it with the government against the recipient's PAN. It exists for two reasons: it gives the government revenue through the year rather than only at assessment, and it creates a reporting trail that makes income harder to under-declare. The recipient claims the deducted amount as credit when filing their return."

24. What is Deferred Tax and Why Does It Arise?

A good discriminator, because a real answer explains a cause rather than reciting a definition.

Effective Answer: "Deferred tax arises from temporary differences between how an item is treated in the books and how it is treated for tax. The classic case is depreciation, where the rate under the Companies Act differs from the rate allowed under the Income Tax Act. That means tax payable this year differs from the tax expense the accounts should recognise. A deferred tax liability arises when taxable income is currently lower than book income and will reverse later, and a deferred tax asset when the reverse applies."

25. What is the Difference Between Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion?

An integrity question wearing a technical costume. Answer the distinction, then be ready for the harder half.

Effective Answer: "Tax evasion is illegal, involving concealment or misrepresentation to escape a liability that has legally arisen. Tax avoidance is arranging affairs within the law to reduce liability, which is legal, though anti-avoidance provisions such as GAAR exist precisely because some arrangements are lawful in form while lacking commercial substance."

Expect next: "Where would you draw the line as an advisor?" The strong answer references commercial substance, and whether you would be comfortable with the arrangement being publicly known.

Deloitte Case Study and Consulting Questions

Consulting and advisory tracks add case-based questioning. These are scored on structure rather than on reaching a specific answer, and the most common failure is starting to guess causes before splitting the problem.

26. A Client's Profits Are Falling While Revenue Is Flat. How Would You Investigate?

Effective Answer: "If revenue is flat and profit is falling, the change is in cost, in mix, or in both. First I would split cost into fixed and variable and see which side moved, because a variable increase points at input prices or efficiency while a fixed increase points at a decision someone made. Then I would check mix, because flat total revenue can hide a shift from high-margin to low-margin products, which reduces profit with no cost change at all. I would want the numbers by product line and by month rather than in aggregate, since aggregates hide exactly the pattern I am looking for."

For guesstimates, the rule is to use round numbers, calculate aloud, sanity-check at the end, and explain what the result means rather than stopping at the number.

5 Mistakes That Get Freshers Rejected at Deloitte

  • Preparing for rounds that no longer exist. GD and JAM have been dropped from the campus process. If your prep plan includes them, it is out of date.
  • Under-preparing the project answer. In a 20-minute round it is the bulk of the interview, not a section of it.
  • Not knowing which entity you applied to. Deloitte India and Deloitte USI are separate, with separate portals and different roles.
  • Resume padding. In a short interview there is no time to recover from one item you cannot defend.
  • A "why Deloitte" answer that works for EY. Swap the firm name and read it back. If it still works, it is not an answer.

How to Prepare for the Deloitte Interview: A 3-Week Plan

Week 1: Your own material. Write your project out in full, then rehearse the two-minute and five-minute versions out loud, including "why that technology" and "where else could it apply". This is the highest-return preparation available for a short interview and almost nobody does it properly.

Week 2: Track-specific technical. Technology and USI: OOP, DBMS and SQL, plus the fundamentals of whichever language you named on your resume. Write joins and GROUP BY by hand. Audit and assurance: the three statements and the depreciation walkthrough, statutory versus internal audit, materiality, assertions, and Ind AS basics. Tax: direct versus indirect, GST structure and input tax credit, TDS, deferred tax. Consulting and analytics: two profitability cases and two guesstimates, spoken aloud.

Week 3: Aptitude, coding and mocks. Quantitative, logical and verbal against a clock, plus coding practice in the compile-and-run format the assessment uses. Then at least three mock interviews out loud, timed to 20 minutes, so you learn what actually fits in the round.

Final Thoughts

Twenty minutes is not long. That sounds like a disadvantage, and for unprepared candidates it is. For you it should be the opposite, because a short interview rewards the person who has rehearsed the two things it will definitely cover: who you are, and what you built.

So spend your last week on those two answers rather than on your fortieth definition. Say them out loud, to a person, with a timer running.

And before you walk in, check your requisition and confirm whether it says Deloitte India or Deloitte USI. It takes thirty seconds and it is the kind of thing an interviewer notices when you get it wrong.
