Most people search for the highest paying government job expecting one name, and then get a list of ten that all claim to be the best. The truth is that "highest paying" depends on what you measure: the starting salary, the ceiling after twenty years, the perks that never show up on a payslip, or the number of years it takes to get in. An RBI Grade B officer starts higher than an IAS officer on paper, while an IAS officer can end up at a pay level few jobs in the country reach. This guide ranks ten of the best-paid government careers in India on those terms, and tells you which exam gets you there.

The Short Answer
The top of the table depends on whether you care about the start or the finish. For starting basic pay, RBI Grade B (₹78,450 a month) and SEBI Grade A (₹62,500 a month) lead among exam-based roles. For the highest ceiling, IAS and Defence officers reach ₹2.25 to ₹2.5 lakh a month in basic pay at the very top. The table below shows both.

Basic Pay, Gross Pay and In-Hand: Read the Numbers Properly
A lot of government salary pages mix these three up, which is why the same job shows different figures on different sites.
Basic pay is the fixed starting point set by the pay scale. Gross pay adds allowances such as dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA) and transport. In-hand pay is what reaches your bank account after the National Pension System contribution, income tax and other deductions.
For example, RBI Grade B's starting basic is ₹78,450, but a salary guide updated in July 2026 puts the gross at about ₹1.55 lakh a month at the start once allowances are added. SEBI Grade A's basic of ₹62,500 grows to roughly ₹1.43 to ₹1.84 lakh a month gross in Mumbai, depending on whether you take accommodation. So when you compare two jobs, compare like with like: basic against basic, or gross against gross.
Also remember that the things which make government jobs valuable often have no rupee figure on the payslip: official housing, a vehicle and staff for senior officers, medical cover, job security and a pension. Where those apply, we note them below.
The 8th Pay Commission: What It Means for These Salaries
The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, with a report due around 18 months later, which points to roughly May 2027. Its reference date is 1 January 2026. As of October 2026, the fitment factor, the new pay matrix and the date it takes effect have not been decided. Trade unions have asked for a fitment factor of 3.833, but that is a demand, not a decision, and the 7th Pay Commission's 2.57 remains the last official number.
What this means for your plan:
- IAS, IPS, IFS, Defence and ISRO or DRDO pay follows the central pay scales, so a revision will lift these salaries once it is notified. Every figure in this guide is on the current 7th Pay Commission scales.
- RBI, SEBI, banks and PSUs set their own pay scales, and reports on the commission's scope say it covers central government employees rather than bank, RBI or PSU staff. Their pay changes through separate settlements.
- Do not wait for the commission before choosing a career. The commission will move numbers up for everyone it covers, but the order of the jobs is unlikely to change much. Check the commission's official website for the latest status.
10 Highest Paying Government Jobs in India in 2026
The civil services
1. IAS (Indian Administrative Service)
The IAS is the job most people mean when they say "government officer", and it has the longest ladder. A new officer enters at pay level 10 with a basic pay of ₹56,100 a month. Over a career that can reach the Cabinet Secretary's fixed salary of ₹2.5 lakh a month, the highest in the civil services. The pay on paper is not the whole story. Senior officers get official housing, a vehicle, staff and security, along with the authority to run a district or a department, which is a large part of the appeal.
Recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination (prelims, mains and interview). Graduates from any stream can apply, usually between 21 and 32 years for the general category, with a limited number of attempts. Check the latest notification for exact rules.
2. IFS (Indian Foreign Service)
The IFS shares the IAS pay scale, but its real difference is the foreign posting. Diplomats serving abroad receive overseas allowances that can lift their total pay well above what the same grade earns at home. A few sources report entry compensation of ₹78,000 or more a month for this reason, though the figure varies with the posting.
Recruited through the same UPSC exam as IAS. The IFS is a seat you choose by rank, and it is usually among the first choices for top rankers who want an international career.
3. IPS (Indian Police Service)
IPS officers enter at the same ₹56,100 as IAS and can reach about ₹2.25 lakh a month as Director General of Police. Pay is only part of the picture: the role comes with housing, a vehicle, security and the authority of command, but also unpredictable hours and a demanding field.
Recruited through the UPSC Civil Services Examination, with physical standards tested after selection.
Money, markets and regulation
4. RBI Grade B Officer
This is the job that surprises people. An RBI Grade B officer starts at a basic pay of ₹78,450 a month, higher than the IAS entry basic, and the scale rises in steps to ₹1,41,600 over about 16 years. A salary guide updated on 31 July 2026 estimates the gross at about ₹1.55 lakh a month at the start, with DA, HRA, local, family and grade allowances on top, and additional benefits such as housing support, a vehicle allowance and medical cover. Work is in monetary policy, banking supervision and financial stability, which suits economics, commerce and finance graduates.
Recruited through the RBI Grade B exam (Phase 1, Phase 2 and an interview). A graduate degree with a minimum percentage is typically needed, and the upper age limit is around 30. RBI sets its own pay scales, so the central pay commission does not directly cover it.
5. SEBI Grade A (Assistant Manager)
SEBI is the regulator of India's securities market, and its Grade A officers are among the best-paid regulators' staff in the country. A guide published in March 2026 reports a starting basic of ₹62,500 a month, up from the earlier ₹44,500, rising to about ₹1.26 lakh after 17 years. Gross pay in Mumbai is estimated at roughly ₹1.43 to ₹1.84 lakh a month, depending on whether accommodation is provided. Streams include general, legal, IT, engineering and research.
Recruited through the SEBI Grade A exam (Phase 1, Phase 2 and an interview). The guide notes that the 2026 notification is still awaited, so confirm the latest pay scale and vacancies on SEBI's website before you plan around these numbers.
6. Bank PO (SBI PO and IBPS PO)
Bank PO is not the highest-paid job on this list, but it is the one most graduates can realistically attempt, with a large number of vacancies. Reported gross pay ranges from roughly ₹56,000 to ₹72,000 a month at the start, depending on the bank and the source, rising to about ₹86,000, which puts annual pay at around ₹8 to ₹10 lakh. The figures vary between guides, so check the bank's notification. Promotions to manager and above raise pay steadily, and the role comes with job security and banking perks such as concessional loans.
Recruited through the IBPS PO exam (for public sector banks) or the SBI PO exam. Any graduate can apply, usually up to age 30. Our Bank PO salary guide has the stage-wise breakdown.
Science, engineering and defence
7. ISRO or DRDO Scientist
Scientists at ISRO and DRDO start at pay level 10 with a basic of ₹56,100 a month, rising to about ₹1.78 lakh at senior levels. Early-career gross is reported around ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 a month with allowances. The money is good rather than the highest on this list, but the work, building satellites and defence technology, is the reason most people choose it.
Recruited through the ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB) exam, the DRDO Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) process, or GATE-based hiring, for engineering graduates. Requirements and age limits vary by notification.
8. PSU Engineer (ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, BHEL and others)
Public sector undertakings pay some of the highest packages among government-linked engineering roles. Reported entry basic pay is about ₹60,000 a month on the executive scale, rising to roughly ₹1.8 lakh, and reported annual CTC figures range from about ₹12 lakh at IOCL and ₹13 lakh at BHEL to ₹16.5 lakh at ONGC and ₹18 lakh at NTPC. These come from a single guide, so treat them as indicative.
Recruited mostly through GATE scores, followed by a group discussion and interview, for engineering graduates. A strong GATE rank is what opens the door, so students planning this route should begin preparing in their second or third year.
9. Defence Officer (Army, Navy, Air Force)
Officers in the armed forces start at pay level 10 with a basic of ₹56,100 a month as a Lieutenant, rising to ₹1.77 lakh, with higher ranks reaching about ₹2.5 lakh at the top. Reported basic pay bands run from about ₹69,400 to ₹2.07 lakh for a Major and from about ₹1.31 lakh to ₹2.16 lakh for a Colonel. Military service pay, subsidised housing, canteen and medical benefits, and a pension add value beyond the salary.
Recruited through the NDA exam (after Class 12) or the CDS exam (after graduation), followed by the SSB interview and medical tests. This is the only career on the list that is open after Class 12 and still reaches a very high level.
The exam most graduates attempt
10. SSC CGL Gazetted Posts
SSC CGL is the broadest door into central government jobs. Its better posts, such as Assistant Section Officer in central ministries (pay level 8, about ₹47,600 a month entry basic) and Income Tax Inspector (pay level 7, about ₹44,900), pay less at the start than the roles above but come with the usual allowances, a stable career path and posting in major cities. Some guides list top-end pay for these posts at about ₹1.5 lakh a month after promotions.
Recruited through the SSC CGL exam (Tier 1 and Tier 2, with a skills test for some posts). Any graduate can apply, with age limits that vary by post, generally between 18 and 32. Our SSC CGL salary guide explains each post.

Are Government Jobs Worth It Compared With Private?
For the top ten roles, the answer depends on what you value. A private sector professional in finance or technology can out-earn most of these salaries within a decade, particularly in investment banking, consulting or product roles. What a government job offers instead is security, a pension, official housing and a role that carries public authority or national importance.
A practical middle path exists: many people prepare for a government exam while working in the private sector or studying, and keep both doors open for a few years. For women applicants, our list of the best government jobs for women in India in 2026 covers roles with relevant benefits.
Pick Your Exam This Month
Choose the one or two jobs above that match your degree and your timeline, then open the official notification for each and note the eligibility, age limit and exam dates. The right exam is the one you can actually prepare for and clear. A job on this list that you reach in three years is worth more than a higher-paying one you give up on in six months.
